National World Osteoporosis Day in Lebanon

Osteoporosis is a significant public health issue, affecting millions globally and leading to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. In Lebanon, osteoporosis remains underdiagnosed and undertreated, a major care gap leading to severe health complications.

As part of the National Task Force on Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disorders ongoing efforts, this event aims to highlight the importance of addressing osteoporosis through a multi-stakeholder strategic coalition aiming at successful implementation, overcoming existing challenges.

OBJECTIVES - The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) in collaboration with the National Task Force on Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disorders, and the Calcium Metabolism and Osteoporosis Program (CaMOP), is conducting a 1-day event, in celebration of World Osteoporosis Day. The aim of this event is to catalyze efforts in osteoporosis management and ensure a coordinated approach to combat this public health challenge.

Specifically, the event aims to:

- Increase awareness about osteoporosis among health professionals, policymakers, and the public.

- Discuss gaps in evaluation of osteoporosis, barriers and facilitators to address that gap.

- Discuss evidence-based implementation strategies for osteoporosis management, barriers as well as facilitators to enhance uptake of the guidelines.

- Disseminate the new Vitamin D guidelines and announce the development of comprehensive osteoporosis management guidelines.

- Encourage collaboration among healthcare professionals, international agencies, and donors to improve osteoporosis care.

- Announce National Osteoporosis Day on October 20 of each year, and highlight the significance of this dedicated day by launching

•Series of presentations by various stakeholders Tuesday Oct 21 (see Agenda below) Series of public awareness events and activities in hospitals and primary care centers.

•Public awareness events in selected public locations to focus on osteoporosis prevention and management.

TARGET AUDIENCE - The event aims to target:

- Government officials and policymakers

- Physicians’ societies involved in osteoporosis care

- Health professional orders and syndicates

- Health care facilities including densitometry centers providing osteoporosis diagnostic procedures

- International agencies and donors
