REPORT ON WORLD OSTEOPOROSIS DAY ACTIVITIES IN ENUGU
Introduction
In commemoration of World Osteoporosis Day 2025, a series of impactful activities were organized in Enugu in line with the rest of our global partners and International Osteoporosis Foundation in collaboration with local partners, to promote awareness on bone health and preventive nutrition. The events, which spanned several days, attracted wide participation from different sectors — including health professionals, sports teams, women’s organizations, students, and the general public.
1. Health Talk at the Anglican Women’s Program (about 50 women in attendance)
The first activity was a health talk held during the Anglican Women’s Fellowship Program. The session focused on “Strong Bones for Life: Prevention Through Nutrition and Lifestyle.” Participants were educated on the causes, risk factors, and preventive measures for osteoporosis. Practical demonstrations highlighted calcium-rich local foods and the role of exercise in maintaining bone health. The talk was well received and generated keen interest among the women, many of whom pledged to adopt bone-healthy diets in their families.
2. Visit to Rangers International Football Team
As part of the awareness campaign, the team visited Rangers International Football Club, Enugu, where players and coaches were sensitized on bone strength, injury prevention, and nutrition. The interactive session emphasized the importance of early screening for bone density and the use of indigenous foods to support skeletal health. Educational materials and calcium-enriched beverage samples were distributed to the team.
3. Walk to Bone Health with about 30 attendees
The “Walk to Bone Health” event was a major highlight of the celebration. Participants from diverse backgrounds—including students, health workers, and fitness enthusiasts joined the walk through major streets of Enugu. The exercise symbolized the importance of physical activity in maintaining bone strength. Placards bearing messages such as “Keep Moving for Strong Bones” and “Healthy Bones, Healthy Life” drew public attention to the cause.
4. Medical Outreach attracted about 70 participants
A free medical outreach was conducted at a IMT Enugu field offering bone health screening, nutritional counseling, and general health checks. Over a hundred participants benefited from bone mineral density assessments, blood pressure checks, and dietary advice. Many attendees expressed appreciation for the initiative and requested periodic follow-up programs.
5. The grande finale ….Indigenous Food Fair with about 200 participants
The activities culminated in the Indigenous Food Fair, held at the IMT Field, Enugu, on October 18, 2025. The fair showcased a variety of bone-healthy indigenous dishes prepared by local vendors and culinary experts. Stalls displayed nutritious meals made from roots, tubers, leafy vegetables, fermented legumes and pulses, locally grown snails, fish, beef, crayfish , beverages from nuts, and sesame bread rolls—each accompanied by educational notes on their nutrient value. The event drew dignitaries, media houses, and a large audience, reinforcing the connection between nutrition and bone health.
6. Future Plans and Collaborations
Following the success of the World Osteoporosis Day events, discussions are ongoing toward collaborations with local bone setters and traditional health practitioners. The goal is to bridge the gap between traditional and modern bone care, fostering partnerships for better management of bone-related conditions in rural and urban communities.
The World Osteoporosis Day 2025 activities in Enugu were highly successful and impactful, achieving broad community engagement and spreading vital awareness about bone health. The Foundation remains committed to sustaining these efforts through continuous education, outreach, and partnerships with Tamar SARC that promote stronger bones and healthier lives for all.
